Ed Johnson Scholarship established

Ed Johnson began serving the City Of Logansport on the Police Department on July 21, 1978 when he was 25 years old.  He proudly served the City for 26 years retiring on July 23, 2004. During his time on the police department, he had many, many opportunities where he protected and served the citizens of Logansport. Fresh from graduation from the police academy, he was involved in the search and arrest of a person suspected of murdering members of his family.  He was also credited for saving the lives of a young mother and her young child from a house fire.

Ed was the happiest when he was patrolling the city streets in his patrol car and did so for the entire length of his police career.  He loved going to kindergarten classrooms in uniform and reading to the children. He wanted all kids to feel comfortable going to a person in uniform when they needed help or just to say hello. While working on the police department, Ed also worked part time in the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office as an investigator and as security for local businesses in Logansport. Ed also knew the importance of education and returned to college earning an Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University.

After his retirement from the Police Department, Ed pursued a part time career in real estate but his love of law enforcement led him back to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department to work part time as a Security Office at the Cass County Courthouse.  The only other occupation that could draw Ed away from law enforcement was when he felt the call to become a Pastor.  Ed was an Associate Pastor at Logansport Church of the Brethren before going to full time ministry at Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren.  He remained at Pipe Creek for over 10 years before retiring from the pulpit Easter Sunday in 2018.

Ed wasn’t really retired, though.  He returned to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department part time at the Courthouse again. Unfortunately, Ed’s second time at the Courthouse was much too short.  Ed was called to his Heavenly home on January 20, 2019.  To honor his memory, his wife and son established the Ed Johnson Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship.

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior residing in Cass County who plans to attend four year college obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree and pursuing a career in law enforcement.
